Woman's view

These are some of the comments made by a number of women when asked about their views and experiences of the breast screening process.

What do you think of the breast screening process?

"A must for all women. The unit came to where I live, I was sent an appointment and I just turned up. It was easy."

"I have always found the system very good. No waiting, clear instructions, sympathetic understanding of the patient's feelings because the physical aspect of the examination is extremely uncomfortable and painful. The result of screening was given very quickly after the test."

"I am 48, I have never received any breast screening or a mammogram and it has never been suggested to me. I will probably be a bit more pro-active myself as my older sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer."

"I have only had one mammogram. Overall I was impressed by the service. I had no idea the actual mammogram would be so painful. The person carrying out the process couldn't have been more encouraging and kind but it was really uncomfortable. It was the main thing I was unprepared for."

What would you say to someone who was attending breast screening for the first time?

"Make sure you attend, it can be painful but if you relax it is not too bad. It must not take the place of self-examination, you must still do this regularly so that you notice any changes."

"It's not the nicest experience in the world but it certainly is nothing to worry about. I think you just have to accept it needs to be done."

"Don't be afraid. Ask as many questions as you feel will give you the information you want and that will make you feel at ease."

If you have had more than one mammogram, have you noticed any changes in the breast screening process and if so, what?

"I have not noticed any changes in the process."

"I did not notice any changes."

"I haven't noticed anything different."
